GPAP - Biodiversity and Plastic Small Grants 2025

January 1, 2025 - June 1, 2025Client: Global Plastic Action Partnership

Background:

Manteos Village in Bandung experiences ongoing environmental and economic challenges, particularly related to waste management. With limited access to formal disposal sites, some residents have resorted to informal practices, including disposing of waste in nearby rivers such as the Cikapundung. Over time, this has contributed to river pollution, which affects local biodiversity and poses health concerns for the community.

At the same time, many residents—especially women and informal workers—face economic vulnerability in a densely populated area that is also prone to environmental hazards. These circumstances highlight the need for a more inclusive and sustainable waste management approach that not only protects the environment but also supports the well-being and livelihoods of local residents.

Aims & Objectives:

Aim:

To enhance environmental sustainability and community resilience in Manteos Village by establishing a community-based waste management system that reduces plastic pollution, restores biodiversity, and empowers vulnerable groups.

Objectives:

  • Reduce plastic waste entering the Cikapundung River.
  • Improve aquatic and riparian biodiversity through waste reduction and tree planting.
  • Empower women and elderly groups through waste-based income opportunities.
  • Strengthen and expand the local waste bank system.
  • Foster long-term behavioural change through education and community engagement.

Methodology:

Baseline Assessment:

Conduct FGDs and interviews to understand community perceptions and current waste practices.

Participatory Planning:

Co-design the waste bank system and biodiversity activities with community input.

Capacity Building:

Deliver training and awareness campaigns on 3R principles, waste bank benefits, and biodiversity.

Implementation:

Expand the waste bank, install trash bins, and plant 100 native trees along the riverbank.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

Midline (Oct) and endline (Nov) evaluations to track participation, waste reduction, water quality, and economic benefits.

Study Visit:

Facilitate a learning tour to Cibunut Village to observe best practices in community waste management.
