Development of Transportation System and Renewable Energy in Central Europe Cities

Dr. Ari Tarigan, also known as Atar and serving as the Cluster Chair of Infrastructure Urban Governance, had a unique opportunity to observe the advancements in the transportation system and renewable energy infrastructure in cities across Central Europe, including Prague, Brno, Vienna, and Bratislava, during a visit that took place from April 8th to April 17th, 2017. His observations yielded valuable insights into the development of these cities. Vienna, in particular, stood out as a well-developed city with a strong reliance on various modes of public transportation, such as buses, trams, and transit systems. The city's urban planning strategies have effectively encouraged residents to embrace electric vehicles as well. Vienna boasts an exceptionally well-integrated public transport network, enabling residents to conveniently use multimodal transportation for their daily commutes at an affordable ticket price. Atar recognized that these positive experiences in Vienna could serve as valuable lessons for other metropolitan cities, including Jakarta and Bandung, which are grappling with transportation challenges of their own. During his visit, Atar also had the opportunity to explore windmill farms located along the border between Austria and Slovakia. This experience highlighted the significant transition occurring in Central European cities as they shift from conventional energy technologies to embrace various forms of renewable energy sources.
