Visiting Safe School in Indonesia And Thailand to Develop an ASEAN Regional Monitoring Mechanism

Visiting Safe Schools in Indonesia And Thailand to Develop an ASEAN Regional Monitoring Mechanism

RDI, acting as the lead representative of the AADMER Partnership Group and commissioned by Plan International, is currently engaged in conducting country consultations in Indonesia and Thailand. The primary objective of these consultations is to formulate regional reporting mechanisms for the Safe School program within the ASEAN region. This initiative is an integral part of the broader ASEAN Safe Schools Initiative, which was inaugurated in 2013 and is currently receiving funding support from the European Union government through DIPECHO.

In both Indonesia and Thailand, RDI Fellows Avianto Amri and Yusra Tebe have been actively engaging with key stakeholders involved in safe schools. These stakeholders include the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the National Disaster Management Offices (NDMOs) in each respective country, as well as prominent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Plan International, World Vision, Save the Children and Care International.

The consultations have revolved around critical issues that necessitate input from the Member States, including defining the fundamental reporting principles, outlining the reporting procedures, and determining the most suitable indicators for implementation. Furthermore, under the leadership of Dr. Saut Sagala, the RDI team has developed an online survey designed to gather insights and feedback from government and non-government stakeholders representing all ten ASEAN Member States. To date, feedback and input have been received from six ASEAN Member States, including contributions from the UN ISDR.
