Background:
Climate change in Makassar gives challenges to the government regarding its adaptation and mitigation efforts. This correlated to the fact that Makassar is quite prone to the unpredictable threat from climate change, such as increasing rainfall or sea level rise. Lately, Makassar city is experiencing flooding caused by those climate change impacts. Flooding impacts many aspects of the urban system, including deteriorating the transport network, worsening traffic which has been the main issue in Makassar.
WRI has developed The Urban Community Resilience Assessment (UCRA), this tool is framed by three dimensions: (i) mapping the vulnerability (physical, social, economic) context at the city level, this assessment intends to identify the exposure and sensitivity to natural disasters and slow-onset events related to climate change; (ii) evaluating community resilience at the neighbourhood scale, this will assess the potential respond to climate-induced natural disaster and to measure the extent of capacity to learn, adapt, and transform; (iii) and assessing individual capacities to respond to climate risks and extreme events, this part will explore the capacities of individuals such as knowledge and understanding of climate hazards, access to information and communications, economic resources, and transportation used to accommodate their daily activities. The two theories can be the basis for our team in developing and elaborating tools for resilience assessment, but it is possible that our team could explore more tools and theories related to urban resilience and community assessment.
Achieving resilience through sustainable transportation means developing transportation systems that are environmentally sustainable, socially equitable, and economically viable. Sustainable transportation helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and promote public health. It also helps to improve access to transportation for underserved communities, reduce traffic congestion, and increase economic opportunities. By investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure such as public transit, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways, we can create more resilient communities that are better equipped to handle economic, social, and environmental challenges. Additionally, promoting sustainable transportation options like carpooling, ride-sharing, and electric vehicles can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and create a more sustainable future for all. Overall, sustainable transportation is a crucial component of building resilient communities that can withstand the challenges of the future.
Aims and Objectives:
The objective of this research is to develop and implement assessment methods that incorporate Urban Community Resilience Assessment (UCRA) and mobility patterns as part of the instrument specificallyn Makassar City and its metropolitan area (Mamminasata Metropolitan Area). In accordance with UCRA tools and the experience of previous studies. To achieve the research’s objective, RDI will implement the following activities:
- Develop UCRA methods that incorporate mobility patterns as part of the instruments
- Conduct data collection and analysis
- Develop project operational plans, including co-develop resilience solutions with multi-stakeholders
- Develop and disseminate the final report
Methodology:
In order to achieve the objectives of this project, we propose a study design using Mix Method, both Qualitative Method and Quantitative Method will be used for the data collection and data analysis process.
RDI will use Desk and Literature Reviews, Key Informant Interviews (KII) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and household survey for the data collection.
The data analysis focused on content analysis, Quantitative Descriptive Analysis, Scoring Method, and Methodology Analysis
