Several factors drive adverse impacts on wetlands, including hydrologic alterations, pollution inputs, and vegetation damage. For example, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam are the top 5 countries in the world based on the amount of mismanaged plastic waste that contributes to wetland pollution, especially river and marine. Ultimately, wetland degradation will also lead to biodiversity loss, environmental vulnerability, and riverbed changes. In the context of peatland, wetland degradation will lead to peatland drainage, massive forest fires, and the peat fires that swept Indonesia, scorching 2.6 million hectares across the archipelago. These events released a lot of toxic carbon into the atmosphere: 81% CO2, 16% CO, and 2.3% CH4. The haze not only ravaged Indonesia but also affected other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and Singapore. Those incidents are some of the many reasons that encourage us to increase awareness of wetland ecosystem management for disaster mitigation and climate adaptation. A balanced, innovative, and sustainable collaborative approach is needed to maintain wetlands. Along with the issues mentioned and the urgency to take action, Resilience Development Initiative (RDI) intends to hold a webinar series with experts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. This webinar will gather audiences from a wide range of sectors, including governments, the private sector, practitioners from non-government organizations, and researchers from various institutions, to share knowledge and experiences, raise awareness, and highlight the leading practices to achieve sustainable wetland management in Southeast Asia.
