November marked a significant moment for Resilience Development Initiative (RDI). Following the Quality of Life Conference, RDI representatives, consisting of Dr Saut Sagala (Senior Research Fellow), Mr Hoferdy Zawani (Deputy Director of Business and External Affairs), Michael Hutahaean (Deputy Programme Manager), and William Harahap (Regional and Urban Planning Programme Officer) participated in the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) from 4–8 November , 2024. Over four days, the delegates attended sessions aligned with RDI’s focus areas, networked with speakers, participants, and exhibitors, and actively contributed to urban resilience and sustainability discussions.

RDI’s involvement in WUF12 focused on key themes such as nature-based solutions, resilient infrastructure, quality of life, and climate finance in urban resilience. Dr Saut Sagala had the opportunity to share his views at the Habitat UNI booth and the India Pavilion. Dr Sagala kicked off the Habitat-UNI Booth Lectures at WUF12 by presenting his view on the importance of resilience in building a better quality of life. Furthermore, at the India Pavilion, Dr Sagala discussed the interplay between infrastructure development, policy frameworks, inclusive participation, and governance strategies for urban resilience.
WUF12 Insights
To strengthen RDI’s knowledge of nature-based solutions, resilient infrastructure, quality of life, and climate finance in urban resilience and the development of K-Hubs, the delegates gathered insights from various sessions at WUF12 and published materials during the event. Insights included:
- Climate Finance: Developing tools for small-scale project financing and reforming financial systems to support climate resilience investments.
- NbS (Nature-based Solutions): Ensuring inclusive access to NbS benefits, exploring their co-benefits, and aligning them with urban planning for resilience.
- Resilient Infrastructures: Evaluating the long-term financial benefits of investing in resilient infrastructure.
- Urban Resilience: Creating resilience frameworks and indicators and integrating climate resilience into urban development through spatial planning.
- Quality of Life: Enhancing quality of life by incorporating disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into urban planning.

Engagement Activities
Additionally, RDI’s delegation engaged with prominent organisations, including the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), OpenStreetMap Team (HOTosm), National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Politecnico di Milano, and French Water Partnership. This engagement is crucial for strengthening RDI’s collaboration on urban resilience issues, with the aspiration for sustained partnership.
RDI’s active participation in WUF12 highlighted its commitment to strengthening urban resilience and quality of life, while encouraging greater future involvement from Indonesian institutions in global forums like WUF13.
