Anticipating the Climate Change Risk through Applicable Training and Field Visits

Anticipating the Climate Change Risk through Applicable Training and Field Visits

From 4 - 15 March 2023, RDI was involved in the implementation of field-work of Managing Risk in the Face of Climate Change (MRFCC) Training, held in Jakarta, Subang, and Indramayu. This project is a collaboration with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation (WCDI).

The first agenda was a visit to the National Disaster Management Agency (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana). Dr. Raditya Jati as Deputy for System and Strategy presented the disaster overview and the roles of BNPB in handling disaster management in Indonesia. The second presentation was delivered by Mr. Ruswandi, Head of Tactical Support in the Emergency Operation Center (Pusdalops). In this session, Mr. Ruswandi highlights the flow of the command chain in emergency status during a disaster in Indonesia.

The last agenda of the day was a visit to Old Town, North Jakarta to observe the climate change and disaster phenomenon in the coastal area. In this session, Mrs. Ika from the Water Resources Agency of DKI Jakarta Province (Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta) and Mr. Basuki from the Regional Disaster Management Agency of DKI Jakarta Province.

The next day, the training continued in Indramayu, West Java. Dr. Saut Sagala, RDI Senior Research Fellow, presented “Getting to Know the Case Area & Case Area Introduction” to the training participants. He provided a comprehensive understanding of the coastal community resilience in the case of Indramayu Regency, including its risks, and challenges due to climate change.

Following the presentation, the agenda continued with participants being divided into four groups to conduct interviews with various stakeholders namely Village Cooperative Unit, Farmers group, Fishermen group, Fish farmers group, Fish market and auction center, and Mangrove zone in Eretan Wetan Village, Eretan Kulon Village, and Soge Village, Indramayu Regency, West Java. The participants engaged in insightful discussions with the stakeholders and gained a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by these groups.
